Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
is the development and provision of specific nutrition procedures to
treat illness, injury or to prevent or delay disease or complications
from disease. MNT is provided by a Registered Dietitian who has
achieved a Bachelor's of Science with course work accredited by the
American Dietetic Association, a 1200 hour dietetic internship and a
nationally credentialing exam.
MNT includes assessment of your
medical history, psychosocial history, physical examination, and dietary
and physical activity history. Psychosocial history covers your
food-related attitudes and behaviors, cultural practices, living
situation, resources and information about family and friends.
The
purpose of the assessment is to determine your need for MNT, to set
parameters and establish the best techniques for your therapy treatment
and to evaluate its effectiveness. The most appropriate nutrition
modalities for you are determined based on this assessment.
